Kinesiology

What is kinesiology?

Put simply...  kinesiology is a natural, holistic health system that uses muscle monitoring (biofeedback from the body) to identify imbalances within the person (structural, chemical and emotional) and to identify the best therapeutic processes to improve and maintain health and well being on all levels.

How can kinesiology help?

Kinesiology can be thought of as a synthesis of Eastern Healing systems (such as Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Western muscle monitoring and balancing techniques.

It can be helpful for:

  • Balancing the acupuncture meridian system and subtle energy fields of the body

  • Reducing emotional stress

  • Assessing food sensitivity and nutritional requirements

  • Reducing aches and pains

Muscle Testing / Muscle Monitoring… How does it work?

Muscle monitoring, also referred to as muscle testing, are essentially the same thing, some practitioners prefer the term monitoring as they feel it is a more accurate description of the process.

In a session the kinesiologist will ask the client to place a limb in a specific position so that the priority muscle is in a contracted position.  The therapist will then apply a gentle pressure to that muscle and the client is asked to match the pressure.  This is not a test of the strength of the muscle but an indication of how the muscle responds to the stimulus of pressure.  The muscle will either remain in position (lock) or will give way creating movement in the limb (unlock). How the muscle responds gives the kinesiologist feedback and this is used to determine the priority areas of stress and the best way to address them.

What happens in a session?

Before coming for an appointment the kinesiologist will often request you complete a health questionnaire, this saves time at the appointment and can allow more productive work to be done.

At the appointment the kinesiologist will ask you why you have come for a session and will explain what will happen and answer any questions you may have.

Your kinesiologist will explain and demonstrate muscle monitoring (muscle testing) and they will help you clarify an appropriate goal for the session.

Muscle monitoring will be used to identify stress (blocked energy within the system) and also to identify the most appropriate solutions.

Solutions/ ‘corrections’ may include…

  • Physical balancing of structures using spinal reflexes, neuro-lymphatic massage, neuro-vascular holding points, acupressure points, other technologies such Low Level laser Therapy (LLLT), Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency (PEMF) or Ultrasound, etc.

  • Vibrational healing modalities – light, colour, sound or energetic healing resonance technologies

  • Nutritional assessment – food / substance sensitivity, nutritional requirement

  • Emotional healing processes – identifying and overcoming limiting belief systems and help with troubling emotional states such as fear and anxiety, anger, grief and separation, etc.

At the end of the session you may be advised on lifestyle changes, given specific exercises to do, 'energetic' essences to take or be recommended appropriate supplements. These work to help maintain the positive changes that have taken place during your session.

How many sessions do I need?

Knesiology is a therapy tailored to needs of the individual, generally there is no set number of sessions.  However, it may be useful to budget for at least 3 appointments, this allows the opportunity to monitor progress and for further gains to be made.  Your kinesiologist will discuss your individual treatment plan with you, which will give you a better idea of how many sessions would be appropriate for you.

Kinesiology - Brief background & history

The term kinesiology requires a little clarification as there are different types of kinesiology and this may lead to some confusion.

The term kinesiology originally referred to the academic study of muscles, movement, sports science and exercise. This system is sometimes referred to Academic Kinesiology. Those trained in this skill will give advice on exercises and postural awareness to improve strength and performance.

In the 1960s there was the development of an integrated health system by health professionals called Applied Kinesiology which uses muscle testing (also called muscle monitoring) as a form of feedback from the body. The pioneers realised that this method could be used to evaluate many different aspects of health; Biomechanical, Biochemical and Emotional stress. This same method was also able to identify appropriate solutions to balance the system, often with remarkable results. This method of kinesiology is often used by Chiropractors, Osteopaths, etc.

Over the years there has been a considerable expansion and development of other branches of kinesiology, generally referred to as Energetic Kinesiology. Whereas Applied Kinesiology generally tends to place more emphasis on the Structural and Biochemical aspects of the body, Energetic kinesiology will place more priority on addressing the underlying energetic imbalances and addressing emotional stress. This system can also bring remarkable results.

Both Applied kinesiology and Energetic Kinesiology systems use muscle monitoring as an essential tool to evaluate stress or imbalance in the body and to identify the best correction or solution.

One is not better than the other, however a skilled practitioner who can draw on a broad range of resources from Applied Kinesiology and Energetic Kinesiology is well placed to identify the most appropriate therapeutic options from the skills at their disposal and to use these for the benefit of the client.

For example, physical balancing skills may be most appropriate for a mechanical priority and emotional skills for an emotional priority.

A good practitioner should be able to address the biomechanical, biochemical, energetic and emotional imbalances.
