Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy - PEMF

What is PEMF

PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields. In simple terms PEMF therapy is a form of magnetic therapy using ElectroMagnetic fields generated by copper coils. It works on a cellular level and has many applications.

It s a well researched therapy with thousands of clinical trials showing the benefits of PEMF therapy and although it has many applications it is most widely used for pain management*, improving sleep and relaxation.

Here at harmony we use high quality clinical PEMF sevices.

How does it work?

It may help to think of the cells of the body like electrochemical batteries.

The pulsed electromagnetic fields stimulate the energy producing part of the cell called the mitochondria.  Mitochondria are referred to as the ‘powerhouse of the cell’ and they transform the energy from food that we eat into energy that can be used by the cell.

Using pulsed electromagnetic fields can enhance the function of the mitochondria and effectively energise the cells of the body in a safe and natural way.

It also aids the production of a protein called calcineurin which has many important roles such as enhancing immune system (T-cell activation), muscle and heart function and also learning and memory.

What can it help?

  • Pain Management
  • Enhance the body’s natural recovery
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Increase energy
  • Reduce stress
  • Enhance Relaxation
  • Insomnia

Contraindications  / cautions

PEMF is a safe and effective therapy for the vast majority of people, however, there are a few situations where it is not recommended or it should be used with caution.

Contraindications

  • Cardiac pacemaker or implanted electrical device (cochlear implants, intrathecal pumps)
  • Organ transplants (patients on immune suppression medications)
  • Pregnancy (there is no evidence of harm -  just a lack of data to establish safety)

Cautions

  • Graves disease (hyperthyroidism)
  • Active bleeding
  • Metal implants (no risk of harm, however high intensity PEMF may stimulate the nerves in the area of the implant)
  • Breast implants (avoid high intensity PEMF directly over breast implants)
  • Neurological conditions - In conditions where there is a susceptibility to seizure (e.g epilepsy) caution is advised. It is very rare to have any issue, however, it is  a theoretical possibility.

To get the greatest benefit from PEMF

Drink water after PEMF session to enhance the benefits.

Eating a mineral rich diet (healthy range of nutritious foods) or supplementing electrolytes - key nutrients such as sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and magnesium may be helpful
